Before school started, the district rolled out the rest of our MAISA writing program with 6 hours of training on one of our professional development days.  The new program was written by teachers at all levels utilizing the state grade level content expectations as a baseline.  Units were developed by teachers using a variety of resources including lessons from colleagues in the district and professional books written by Ralph Fletcher.

Throughout all 4 units, students will be exposed to instruction through student samples, teacher samples, and mentor text.  Students will write daily, sometimes it will be stories, lists, memories, etc.  I will also be writing and sharing my thoughts and stories with them as well.  Students will edit their work, work of peers, and my writing.  Some pieces will be taken to the final draft stage, some will remain works in progress.  All writing assignments will be in your child's Writer's Notebook (WNB).  They can decorate these with pictures, magazine clippings, etc by September 9.

The units that will be covered this year are Writing Personal Narratives with Power, Literary and Persuasive Essays, Writing Nonfiction with Power and Writing Research with Power (optional).

Research-based persuasive essay:  To take a stand and support the stand with facts vs. opinion.  Students will write a position piece that demonstrates understanding of central ideas, use supporting details (e.g. position or evidence), use an organizational pattern, and use multiple headings and subheadings.

Literary Essay:  To infer themes across multiple texts.  Students will identify a theme across two or more texts, create a thesis statement identifying the common theme, and provide specific examples from each text to support the theme.

Students will also have some writing assignments in science, social studies and reading.

We will also work on grammar through mentor text and our own writing samples.  See the link below for more information.
