Introduction of Mrs. Nicole Chichila
Dear Johnson Families,
I would like to take this time to introduce myself. My name is Nicole Chichila and I am the Learning Specialist at Johnson. My role of working with struggling learners has always been my passion. I will be at Johnson full time to work with students that need extra support. Johnson is a great place to work and my goal as a Learning Specialist is to help students build confidence in their learning and achieve success. This is my 18th year of teaching and I love it! I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Madonna University. My Master’s in Special Education has helped me in the transition from a classroom teacher of 10 years to a Learning Specialist.
I truly enjoyed introducing myself to our new 5th grade students as well as welcoming back our 6th grade students. I explained to every class that needing help is not a sign of weakness. As we go through our life, we will encounter situations where we need help. Now is a great time to start taking ownership of our learning and seek out the proper and necessary resources when needed. We discussed some “tools” that we can utilize to help us learn. There are simple tools like using calculators or sticky notes to more complex tools like cell phones and tablets. All can be very useful if used correctly.
I work closely with our Title I staff and classroom teachers to provide extra support in any of the core curriculum areas. However, most students will receive support in reading, writing or math. Part of my job is to help identify students that could benefit from extra support in these areas. We use assessments, formal and informal observations and previous test scores to gather as much information about our students as possible. Then, we offer support in their academic struggles, targeting specific concept areas. We reinforce concepts in a small group setting. Whether your child needs Title I services or Learning Specialist support, you can count on us to notify you of services! You will always have the opportunity to discuss these services with us prior to them starting. Often times I will go into the classroom and work with a small group of students or invite students back to my classroom to work on skills. Because I know students learn differently, I may use lots of different tools to provide support! I believe making learning exciting and engaging will get them over those learning obstacles.
