Reading Month - It's Reading Cats & Dogs!

It’s Reading Cats & Dogs!

Reading Month Goal

We have set a school-wide reading goal of 4,700 hours for the month of March. We will be tracking our reading progress starting March 1. Students will turn in signed coupons for every hour they read.

Weekly Book Drawing

Each week, one reading coupon will be drawn from each classroom. Each of those students will win a new book.

Classroom Charts

Each classroom will be provided with a chart and stickers to track each student's reading achievement.

Spirit Days

March 2:      Read to Your Pet Day – bring a stuffed animal to school.

March 9:      Wear a Pet Shirt Day - bring $1 donation to wear a hat.

March 16:    Cats vs. Dogs Day – wear a cat or dog shirt or black for cats, red for dogs

March 23:    Whiskers & Ears Day – Wear your whiskers and ears in support of our furry friends

Additional Events:

March 14:    Battle of the Books, 1:15 p.m.

Guessing Jar

How many Scooby Snacks are in the container? Each of our students will get to make one educated guess. Students with correct answers will earn a token prize, and their entries will go into a drawing to win something for their class to share.

Match the Teacher with His/Her Pet Contest

For this contest, students will have to find the signs around the building, match the teacher with his or her pet, write down the answer, and turn their answers in to Ms. Rebbe. Students with correct answers will earn a token prize, and their entries will go into a drawing to win an additional prize.

Jayhawks for Pets

How many pets can we sponsor? We’re planning to collect coins all month to help raise funds for the Humane Society – Use your spare change to cast your vote for Cats or Dogs. We’re also planning to build Kitty Forts and collect used blankets and towels to give to the Humane Society.

Round Robin Reading

Teachers who choose to participate will switch classrooms two or three times in order to read to other classes for 15-20 minutes each on Wednesday, March 21st.

LMC Read-Ins

Each class has been encouraged to reserve a read-in time in the LMC during National Reading Month. This is a voluntary activity, solely for the enjoyment of reading. Students are invited to bring books, pillows, and small stuffed animals with them. If the LMC is already busy at a particular time, the large group room is also available.

All School Read

On Thursday, March 1st, right after the pledge of allegiance and announcements, every person in our school (including visitors!) will help us kick off Reading Month by stopping everything and reading for 15 minutes. We will close out Reading Month the same way, having an All School Read on March 29 at 3:10 p.m.

Community Readers

As always, we encourage teachers to invite other staff members, family members, and other special people to read to their students during the month of March.
